Producing more bicyclists, one saved life at a time

An Illinois Not-For-Profit Corporation (501 (3) (C)

OUR MISSION

Pedal4Life produces entertaining and educational content for public television. We then leverage our content with bicycling events and programs that support people recovering from opiate and other substance use disorders.

WHAT WE DO

We work with drug treatment centers to build bicycling into their patients' recovery process.

Our program helps those in recovery to socially integrate and experience the physical, emotional, and social benefits of bicycling.

HOW WE DO IT
  • Partner with Performance Bicycle, veterans, drug treatment centers and physicians to promote bicycling as a liberating, healthful activity.
  • Recruit veterans to share stories that educate and empower civilian patients to pedal toward living productive, fulfilling lives.
  • Administer our 6-week Pathway2Home program; and, provide bicycles, bike safety gear, and bicycle lessons to patients in recovery.
  • Organize community bicycling events that raise awareness and funds so we can advance our mission.

WHY WE DO IT

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 21.5 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with a substance addiction. More than 130 die from overdose each day. Of these, about 50 people die from prescription drug overdose.

"These deaths are happening to our friends, our families, and neighbors," says Dr. Donald Teater of Teater Health Solutions.

As the Executive Producer and Host of Pedal America, Ira David annually rides his bicycle with veterans who discovered bicycling as a means to help themselves eliminate opioids from their lifestyles.

Bicycling repairs damaged cells and increases the body's natural endorphins; strengthens health, physical endurance, and emotional stability; and, builds friendships founded on the shared interest in living sustainable healthful lifestyles.

PLEASE DONATE

Pedal4Life was founded by Ira David Levy, the executive producer and host of Pedal America, presented on PBS stations. Because the travel and lifestyle series promotes bicycling as an all-inclusive lifestyle activity, Ira David recognizes the need for those recovering from substance use disorders to have access to sustainable healthful lifestyles.
